| | |
| Heyy all, this is the end to my great vacation at home im leaving in a half an hour to catch the train back home.
Well i must say this was an amazing few days Friday was
soo great I went out to dinner with Jenn, Raff and Keith,
ahh i love you guys good food, good friends, what more could
u ask for?? And afterwards Me, Mike, Sarah, Jen, James and
Jennnnnnnninnnnininininnnnn (<<<haha!) went to Sports Plus to
see the Haunted House, and it was sooo great because we got a good
deal, for $20 we got a ticket for the Haunted House, a free game of
bowling, a free ride on the mini rollercoaster, and 20 coins for the
games.
At first the Haunted House seemed like it was going to be lame, and not
very scary, the first part was pretty stupid, we put on 3d glasses and
ran around this room that had things glowing on the walls. That
was only the beginning part, thank God, then we went into the main
place and it was soooo goood! i was so scared hahah call me a wimp, but
i was ! It was really dark, and things were glowing and popping out at
you, and alot of the people would get in your face and not let you
through and talk to you. I was trying to hang onto Mike for dear
life. lol.
Anyways afterwards was DISCO bowling!! The ride and playing a few video
games. It was such a great night!! that place is awesome, i can't
believe i've never been there before. But i could tell it was a
big teenie bopper hang out..but oh well.
Then on Saturday me Sarah and Mike went to Tanger Outlets ..165 brand
name stores..can be heaven or a nightmare!! well this time it was alot
of fun, but really long. I took Mike shopping for clothes, and he
got alot of stuff from Tommy and Pac Sun so he'll be lookin hot
haha love you baby And afterwards we hung out with the Gang, and
then i collapsed.
AAAAAAAAAAnd this morning i spent a lil time with Kat, and caught up on
life and then swung by Jess' house for a quick hello.
This weekend was alot of fun, and im happy i came home to see
everyone!!! im comin home again..for thanksgiving so i'll see
you all soon!!! love you guys :::mwah!::::
Im goin back to school, and im excited to see Dani, MIKE"S NEW HAIR!!
hahahah and the rest of the gang. it will be a LOOOOOOng train
ride home...hopefully i will find a ride home from the trainstation :( aright, adios!

| Heyy all, i <3 NY.
living in New York i never really liked it
that much, i was always looking to get away and get out. But then..once
your out your NEW YORKER pride comes out!! haha everytime someone says
New York, Long Island or NYC.. im like YEAHH!!! THATS MY HOME!! hahaha
Well
anyways, im home for fall break, This time around, it isn't such a
shock coming home again. It feels weird being home, but not as weird as
it did the last time. The sad thing is that i don't think of this as
home anymore... a home.. but not MY home.. i dunno that doesn't make
sense. But i feel like this is the vacation, and soon i will leave and
go home again. Even though im here, im thinking about school, my room,
my FRIENDS! man i miss you guys already :( especially DANI!!!!!!! Last
night Mike met up with me in the City, where my train dropped me off,
and we went out to Red Lobster in times square, and we pased an H &
M and i had to immediately call Dani up and tell her where i was. Haha.
Last night i got home really late. My weekend is sooooooo
crazy! ahh there are too many people to see and not enough time :( My
mom is going on a retriet this weekend..leaving tomorrow, so i've been
trying to spend time with her before she leaves.
Haha one thing
i LOVE about being home is that i get spoiled!! "is there anything you
need? ok lets go out and get it!" "Anything else? you sure?" "Here's
some moeny for the weekend." eeeeee!! i love it
Today my mom spoiled me like crazy!! We stopped by party city, and i
picked out my halloween costume, yup you guessed it.. im going to be an
angel. haha. I bought wings, and a halo and a white bowa, and other
random things here and there. Next stop, Rite Aide, to pick up whatever
my hearts desire, and then off to the mall to pick up a pair of pants.
I love my mom
Anyways
right now im waiting for Sarah to get home from school so we can go
out, and then were meeting up with Mike, and the gang for a little bit.
Tomorrow im spending time with my mom in the morning, and then Saturday
me Mike and Sarah are going to Tanger outlet stores to take him
shopping for clothes.. yay he is actually letting me PICK OUT clothes
for him, to give him a little style
Psst i <3 Dani and Ryan!!! eeee! best ppl in the world ;)
alright here is an ode to Long Island.. ahh soo true:
You Know You're From Long Island When...
You know someone who went to Chaminade.
Billy Joel said it best, "Either you date a rich girl from the North Shore, or a cool girl from the South Shore."
What's the big deal about the Hamptons?
If you're not from Long Island or NYC, you're not really from New York.
You don't go to Manhattan, you go to "the City"
You never, ever want to "change at Jamaica..."
You never realize you have an accent until you leave. (sooo true!!!!)
You can name at least three bands that came from Long Island.
Is Huntington really that cool?
The goddamn geese are everywhere!
At some point in your life you or someone you know has owned an animal that came from North Shore Animal League.
You walk around the mall aimlessly.
You drive around your town with your friends, and that's the most exciting part of your evening.
On the weekend, your evening consists of seeing a movie, going bowling, or playing pool.
When you walk in the city and you see two men holding hands...it becomes normal to you.
You live in the shadow of the greatest city in the world, but you never go there.
When you're away from Long Island, you love it and when you're there, you don't. (UMM YEAH!!)
You know that the beach sucks during the day and is the most magical place in the world at night
You know the exact point at which Queens turns into Nassau simply on intuition.
You're still waiting for a bridge to Connecticut.
You've tried to use your father's monthly ticket to ride the LIRR. It worked.
No matter what you do, you end up at the diner.
High school sports aren't that important.
You've never been to Times Square on New Year's Eve.
Each one of your diverse friends mercilessly makes fun of his own background.
You love that salty smell of the ocean.
No, you don't want mustard on that burger!
You can order a pizza pie and a soda and people will understand.
You felt slighted when Snapple sold out.
You don't associate Fire Island with gay men.
You watched a game show and wondered, "why are these people so happy that they won a trip to New York?"
When you hear Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" you try
to figure out what places on Long Island he's talking about.
You know that parts of the Godfather were filmed on LI.
You always liked Billy Joel, but as soon as you leave, you love Billy Joel.
You've been to the Tanger Outlets and came home with nothing to show for it.
You have or someone you know has fallen asleep on the LIRR and ended up
in one of these three places; Babylon, Port Washington or Hicksville.
Your parents took you to Nathans or Carvel
Public beach? What's that?
You can correctly pronouce places like Happauge, Commack, Islip, Islandia, Massapequa.
You know the location of 6 malls and a dozen McDonalds and 36 7-11's.
You grew up thinking Chinese food was a basic food group.
You're used to driving down the street in December and seeing more
light-up menorahs than you can shake a latka at. In fact, even your
non-Jewish friends know what Matzoh is. And you've never driven more
than 10 miles without seeing a temple.
You can remember making up rules for “Shotgun” calls in high school.
Your elementary school promoted dodge ball as the top gym activity.
You consider nachos and cheese at the Coliseum to be a suitable dinner date.
You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from Long Island.
umm..well yeah!! all of these are so true it's scary!! aight adios

| Allright.. load on the work..ahh vacation soon....
Sincei spent my WHOLE weekend writing this darn paper.. yes im going to
share it with you because it is near and dear to my heart.
Actually the paper itself isn't, but the material in it is:
The Old Testament and My Life
In my life, the Bible is an
essential element in learning more about God, His will, and how to follow
it. Many times I open up to parts in the
New Testament in times of trouble or need, or just in my daily devotions. Hardly ever do I look to the Old Testament to
fulfill these needs. To me, the Old
Testament is filled with cultural rules of Israel, and bedtime stories. It is hard to relate to my life, and to my
problems.
My opinion would help in Bruce C.
Birch’s argument. He believes that many Christians today think the Old
Testament is outdated, irrelevant, and not as useful as the New Testament. The Old Testament displays a God of wrath and
judgment, while the New Testament overrides the old with the God of Love. He believes that the Old Testament is just as
useful as the New to help understand God, and use key themes in those chapters
as guides for our lives and our relationship with God. He also stresses that God does not change
from the Old to New Testament; The God of love is the same throughout the whole
bible, not just the NT.
Birch wrote a book called “What
Does The Lord Require? The Old Testament Call to Social Witness” to push
the importance of studying the Old Testament and relating it to the church and
our lives. Birch states that stories,
hymns, histories, parables and visions are just as important to study as the
Ten Commandments and ethical teachings to help shape our faith and minister to
the world. It also helps us better
understand God’s character. While reading this book, he proved to me again
and again, how important the OT is to the church and our daily lives. But what most stood out to me, was the
descriptions of God’s character and relationships with us, shown through the
Old Testament in Creation, the Exile, Gods covenant, and through the
Prophets.
Birch first starts with
Creation. He describes an interesting
view of the two creation stories.
Although the two accounts are different in its detail and importance, he
believes they are complementary to each other in describing the power of
God. The first focuses on God’s absolute
sovereignty. From the void, God merely
speaks a command and all of creation is made from His own free will.
The second account focuses on the relatedness
of God, and his personalized relationship with his creation. God makes all
plants, animals and beings to live in a harmonious relationship with each
other. He describes God’s creation of man by stating “God creates almost as a
loving craftsman, intimately shaping the first human creature and breathing
life into it.” God makes woman to be
man’s companion allowing them to have an intimate relationship. Along with these examples, God walks and
talks with his creation in the Garden of Eden, creating a loving God who cares
about the needs of His creation. Another theme that goes along with the
Creation story is Gods blessings. The
concept of blessings helps us to realize God is concerned for our wellbeing,
providing for the care of His creation.
These two views combined portrays a powerful God who rules with love and
care towards His people striving through an intimate relationship with us.
Birch stresses that God’s initial intention for creation was for us to
experience “shalom” which means wholeness in Hebrew. We are to experience the goodness of
creation, while also having community with all creation. Fulfillment is found from relationships with
God and all of his creation. Along with
the gift of creation, we were given the gift of freedom; freedom to obey or
disobey. They choose to disobey God’s
word, and the consequence of eating the apple, was sin and death, causing a
brokenness of “shalom.” This brokenness ruined
the openness in their relationship with God, with one another, and with
themselves. This also helps us
understand the brokenness in today’s world, and what we have to settle with,
when God first created us for wholeness.
The consequences of sin lead to
Adam and Eve’s exile from the Garden of Eden, Cain’s exile, the flood, the
scattering and confusion from the Tower of Babel, and then Birch moves on to
discussing understanding out relationship with God through the Exile out of
Egypt. The generations of ancestors of
Abraham and Jacob became slaves under the dominion of an oppressive Egyptian
Pharaoh. God heard the cries of His
people, and sent Moses to deliver them from their oppression. Birch believes
that this shows something about the character of God. God is displayed as one who sees and hears,
who notices Israel’s
sufferings. Birch goes even deeper to
describing God as “knowing” their pain, which the word in Hebrew means also “to
experience.” For God to “know” Israel’s
suffering demonstrates God’s unique relationship and involvement with His
people, by actually participating in our pain and suffering.
This story is a prime example of
God’s salvation and liberation. He
rescued them from out of oppression and delivered them to the land of milk and
honey. Birch stresses that “Israel
comes to know God not only as one who stands behind the ongoing created order
of things (the God who creates and blesses) but as one who has entered history
in a decisive way to affect salvation.” The
people of Israel
were faced with a seemingly hopeless situation, and God saved them.
There is a covenant made between
God and the Israelites, starting with the Ten Commandments. This covenant was to establish an
understanding to the people of the alternate community they were to have with
God, and also with each other in respond to God’s salvation. This is the beginning of God’s faithfulness
that carries through the Old Testament.
This covenant was also to base their community on justice, righteousness
and to restore shalom. Birch illustrates the concept that hope was
possible through a God that was faithful and served justice.
This concept of hope and justice is
that same message reminded to the people of Israel through the prophets. These two prophetic messages of justice and
hope are two sides to God’s message to his people. Prophets were considered guardians and protectors
of the covenant of faith. Amos, Hosea,
Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel are considered to be classic prophets.
Many times the covenant community participated in the brokenness of man with
selfishness, materialism, corruption and oppression, instead of encouraging
justice and wholeness. When the people were lead astray from the covenant with
God, they received the judgment. Many
times, God’s judgment was through exile.
Judgment is never given without
hope. Times of judgment were times of
destruction and despair, but also of rejuvenation. Because God was often displeased with the
People of Israel’s violations of the covenant, judgment was needed to shake
them of their misdeeds. Hope given from
God in these times was filled with joy, and renewal. God promised to rebuild the nation into
prosperity and peace.
These examples from creation, the
exile out of Egypt,
God’s covenant, and Prophetic messages helped me better to understand God’s
character. Like many other Christians, I
believed that the God of the Old Testament was a just a God of wrath and
judgment, and was later replaced with Jesus as a God of Love. The God of forgiveness and love it was found
in a loving creator, caring for our needs, and in the forgiveness of a straying
Israel. God didn’t love and protect Israel because
they deserved it, he redeemed them because they were his chosen people which he
had made a covenant with, and was fulfilling that covenant. This Old Testament God is one that cares
about our hurts and needs, and experiences that pain and brokenness with
us. He is a God of salvation and
liberation, liberating his people from oppression and exile. It has become clearer to me, that God hasn’t
changed; it was only my ignorance that made me believe he had. These themes carry across to the New
Testament with Jesus. Birch stressed the
importance of the Old Testament to be known in the church as well as the
individual. The most important concept I
learned from Birch is that it is important to read the Old Testament to learn
from his examples he has given us, learn about our history, and altogether
fully understanding the character of God.
